Innovation is not only a major driver of economic growth in developed and developing countries, but innovation-based growth has become one of the main objectives of the knowledge-based economy in recent years. As a consequence of globalization, cities and regions compete to become the main hub on global networks. Therefore policymakers throughout the world try to build the appropriate infrastructure in order to establish successful firms to stimulate innovation, competitiveness and economic growth. Regional Innovation System is the result of the interaction of actors such as organizations, firms and institutions that leads to generation, assimilation and diffusion of knowledge and ultimately increase innovation and competitiveness in the region. In this regard, researchers and organizations monitoring regional innovation systems proposed varying models according to the specific characteristics of each region.
The purpose of this book is to understand the concept of the regional innovation system and its models. The book is organized into two main sections. The first section consists of three main chapters discussing the theoretical foundations of regional innovation systems. The first chapter deals with understanding the concepts and theoretical literature on innovation systems. The second chapter focuses on theoretical models of location-based innovation. In the third chapter, a more scrutinized analysis of the Regional Innovation System is provided. The second section provides a comprehensive review of the proposed models and frameworks of regional Innovation Systems. The purpose of this section is to understand related variables, indicators and dimensions and also to criticize the approaches used in the field of regional innovation Systems.
