It is worth mentioning that Dr. Reza Maniei, IRPHE Research Deputy, Dr. Maghsood Farastkhah, Associate Professor of Higher Education Planning Group at IRPHE and other Professors of the Institute were present at this speech meeting.
At the beginning, she mentioned the purpose of choosing the topic of the meeting and said; discussing the role of universities in popularization of science is in line with the activities of IRPHE, in addition, it allows us to cooperate with higher education professionals in order to achieve solutions to actualize more the potential role of universities in popularization of science.
Then Dr. Ghadimi briefly reviewed the concept of popularization of science, the stages of its development and the status of popularization of science in Iran. She defined the concept of popularization of science as follows: popularization of science is an attempt to promote knowledge, to spread the scientific thought, and the application of science at various levels of social life. In this regard, the primary objective of popularization of science is to increase the public perception of science in order to see its effects in their daily lives so that ultimately lead to their improvement and prosperity. She also analyzed the status of the popularization of science based on its strengths and weaknesses, opportunities and threats.
Dr. Ghadimi examined the status of popularization of science in Iran from the perspective of upstream documents and said; in Iran popularization of science has begun since the 40's with the launch of the radio which broadcast the human journey to space. But we are still in the phase of a unilateral relationship between science and society and the involvement of people that is needed in science is not created.
She went on to say that the lack of participation of universities as major players in popularization of science is the main reason for failing in the country. She said about the impact of universities on popularization of science as follows; rapid changes in science and technology, and in particular the introduction of new technologies, have dramatically changed the development process of many nations and, on the other hand, adaptation to the new developments in science and technology has become an important part of people's lives. From these two perspectives, we can see the impact of academic centers and universities in popularization of science.
Director of Popularization of Science Research Group emphasized on very little acquaintance of academics with the popularization of science, its goals and functions, lack of proper management system and sense of responsibility in the field of popularization of science, lack of attention to the popularization of science in the current strategy of universities and the lack of proper structure for popularization of science in the universities and mentioned the limitations of universities in popularization of science. At the end of her speech, she examined ways to engage academics and answered the questions of the audiences.
